Over the course of our lifetime it is not uncommon for people to change careers several times. The reasons for change are varied and undoubtedly personal yet the decision is also wrought with challenges and fear of the unknown.
One of the biggest challenges is how to change your career without taking a cut in salary. Is the truth of having to starting from the bottom enough to jolt us back to reality and continue with the daily grind? Not necessarily.
We have complied a list of 5 tips that will help you pivot careers without losing out on salary?
1. One step, two steps
Changing from the career you have to your ideal career does not have to be done in one fell swoop. Career change can be incremental. While we are normally concerned with career trajectory, your skills set may make you an ideal(ly) candidate for a huge variety of other jobs. You could pursue a career that utilises the skill you most enjoy as a step towards your ideal career.
2. Research & educate
The more you know and understand about the sector you want to enter the better you can prepare. If you realise that you will need certain knowledge, then get qualified. Understanding the sector will also help you to come across as knowledgeable and engaged at your interview.
3. Let it become your side gig
If you have an interest that you want to make a living from, see if you are able to earn a side income from it. This first-hand experience will be hugely insightful and confirm whether you can envisage yourself doing it on a full time basis.
4. Patience and determination
Pursuing a career change requires focus, hard work, patience and determination. Learning something new can take you out of your comfort zone and challenge you in ways you will not expect. It is important to prepare as best you can for the challenges and realise that things will get easier with time.
5. Make a move
Sometimes you just have to make the first move. Don’t let fear hold you back. Start with something small and do something to move yourself toward your goal every day / week / month. If you do what you have always done you will get what you have always had.
